Layers and groups

Stacking order, grouping, hiding and locking pieces.

The Layers panel

The Layers panel lists every piece on the canvas, top of the stack first. Pieces inside a group are indented under it.

Each row has:

  • A chevron on groups, to fold or unfold the group.
  • Move up and Move down, to change the stacking order one step.
  • Lock, which stops the piece from being clicked, dragged or nudged on the canvas. A locked piece can still be selected here, styled in the inspector, and deleted.
  • Hide, which takes the piece off the canvas and out of exports until you show it again.

Click a row to select that piece. ⇧-click or ⌘-click to select several. Selecting a piece on the canvas unfolds the groups above it so you can see its row.

Dragging rows

Drag a row to reorder it:

  • Onto another row: it moves above or below that row, depending on which half you drop it on.
  • Onto a group row: drop on the top part to go above the group, or on the rest of the row to go into it.
  • Out of a group: drag it to a row outside the group.

A group left with nothing in it is removed.

Grouping

Select two or more pieces and press ⌘G, or click Group in the inspector. Select a group and press ⇧⌘G to ungroup it.

A group moves, rotates and lines up as one piece, and it can draw a plate behind its contents. See Groups. Every style you start from is a single group.

Stacking order

Pieces higher in the list are drawn on top. Besides Move up and Move down, the inspector’s Bring to front and Send to back move a piece to the very top or bottom within its group.
