Inside meeting apps

Nametags in Zoom

Use Nametags inside the Zoom client, with no desktop app.

Nametags also runs as a Zoom App, a panel inside Zoom itself. Zoom draws your tag on your video with its own video effects, so there’s no camera to install and no desktop app needed. It only works in Zoom meetings. For other meeting apps, use the desktop app.

Opening Nametags in Zoom

  1. In the Zoom desktop client, open Apps.
  2. Find Nametags and open it. If your organization hasn’t installed it for everyone, add it from the Zoom App Marketplace first.
  3. The first time, Zoom asks you to allow Nametags to use your Zoom account. Allow it.

After that first time, Nametags signs you in by itself whenever you open it in Zoom. If you decline, you can sign in later from the Sign in step.

Your tag comes from your Zoom profile

The first time you sign in, any empty field on your tag is filled from your Zoom profile: your display name, job title, company, department and profile picture as your logo. Nametags never overwrites something you’ve already filled in, and you can change any of it afterwards.

Using it

The panel has the same preview and the same You, Appearance and Advanced tabs as the desktop app. Your nametag describes every setting. The differences in Zoom:

  • There’s no Camera setting. Zoom uses whichever camera you’ve chosen in Zoom’s own video settings, and Nametags draws on top of it.
  • Meeting background is set through Zoom’s virtual background, so Zoom asks for your permission the first time.
  • Pausing shows your plain video in Zoom until you turn Nametags back on.

The status line tells you where things stand:

Status Meaning
Ready — your tag applies when you join a meeting You’re set. Join a meeting.
In a meeting — turn your camera on to show your tag Start your video.
Live — your tag is on your Zoom video Everyone can see your tag.
Paused — Zoom will show your plain video Turn Nametags back on with the switch at the top.

If you also have the desktop app

If Zoom’s camera is set to the Nametags camera from the desktop app, your video already carries a tag, and the Zoom app drawing a second one would give you two. The Zoom app notices this and asks you to pick one:

  • Nametags camera: the same tag everywhere you use the camera. This is the default.
  • Zoom: drawn by Zoom, for this call only.

Closing it

Closing the Nametags panel in Zoom removes the tag from your video.
