While Nametags is running

The status line, the menu bar icon, pausing, and what your call sees when Nametags isn't running.

Nametags only uses your camera during calls

You don’t start or stop anything before a call. When a meeting app starts using the Nametags camera, Nametags turns your real camera on. When the app lets go, Nametags turns it off again. Your camera light is on only while a call, or the preview, is using it.

The status line

The top of the window tells you where things stand:

Status Meaning
Ready for your next call Everything is set up. Choose Nametags as your camera and your tag appears.
On your video now A call is using the Nametags camera, and everyone in it can see your tag.
Paused Nametags is paused. See below.
Needs your attention Something is wrong. The message underneath says what, and Troubleshooting explains each one.

Closing the window doesn’t quit

Closing the Nametags window only hides it, and your tag keeps working. Click Nametags in the Dock, or use the menu bar icon, to bring the window back.

To actually quit, choose Quit Nametags from the menu bar icon.

The menu bar icon

Nametags puts an icon in the menu bar at the top of your screen. Its menu shows:

  • The status: Ready, Live with the frame rate when a call is using the camera, Camera on when only the preview is, or Paused.
  • The virtual camera: for example Virtual camera: live, ready, or setup needed.
  • Pause Nametags / Resume Nametags.
  • Open Nametags…, to bring the window back.
  • Quit Nametags.

Pausing

Use the switch at the top right of the window, or Pause Nametags in the menu bar. While paused, Nametags stops reading your camera. A call that’s still using the Nametags camera shows a still card with your name instead of your video, much like turning your video off.

To be seen without a tag, switch the meeting app’s camera to your normal camera instead. Choosing the Nametags camera shows how.

When Nametags isn’t running

If you quit Nametags while a meeting app has the Nametags camera selected, the call shows a card instead of video:

  • If Nametags has run before, the card shows your name, title and logo in your tag’s style.
  • Otherwise, the card says Nametags isn’t running and Open Nametags to start your camera.

Open Nametags and your video comes back.

Opening Nametags when you log in

Nametags doesn’t start by itself after you restart your Mac. To have it open automatically, add it under System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions → Open at Login.
